Higher Quality Video Cameras: Canon GL2 Kit with Accessories

  • Canon GL2-A perennial camera buff’s favorite. This is a camera for serious videographers who insist on great quality and enjoy being able to have complete manual control over all the functions for more and better artistic control. Of course, the GL-2 can also be set to automatic if you’re shooting in a run-and-gun documentary style.
  • A camera like the GL-2 can be a joy to use since it has so many great features and functions. I am thrilled to include the Canon Gl2 in my video equipment store inventory. Click here to go video camera camera shopping!
  • Right now we are bundling the GL2 camera as a kit with a full package of accessories, including a light and a fluid head tripod for under $2,600.
  • The GL-2 uses Mini DV tapes and records in dv (digital video) format. This is one of the best formats to shoot in if you want to edit the video that you take. This format has been around awhile and every video editing software program I know of accepts dv file format.
  • For a high quality image, the image sensing device for the gl2 includes 3 CCD chips. With a three chip camera, you have a separate CCD for each primary color (red, green, blue). Three chip cameras give a much better image in terms of color, clarity than a smaller one-chip camera. The chips are 1/4″ size, 410,000 Gross Pixels, 380,000 Effective Pixels, using Pixel Shift Technology.

Sony DCRHC38 digital Video Camera.

  • A photo will capture a special moment in time but it can't hope to do justice to your baby's first steps or lights shimmering across the surface of the Seine.
  • It's occasions such as these that really call for a video camera - but if you're saving up for that holiday to Paris or a new bub is on the way, your budget may not stretch far. When you can't spend thousands on a high-end camcorder but still want good-quality video, consider a miniDV camcorder.
  • MiniDV camcorders are small and light, perfect for one-handed operation. They usually come with powerful zoom lenses, electronic image stabilisation and large LCD screens. But what makes miniDV so special is that you can enjoy a bucket-load of features at an affordable price.
  • You'll find plenty of budget miniDV camcorders priced at about $500 but camcorders that record to DVD tend to cost hundreds more. The cheapest camcorders with a built-in hard drive can cost double the price.
  • The miniDV format isn't new. In fact, you could call it the grandaddy of camcorder technology, having made its debut in the mid-1990s.
  • MiniDV cameras record video to a small cassette tape - that's right, tape - it sounds quaint when you consider there are camcorders that record to DVD, hard drives and even flash memory cards, but there are advantages to good ol' miniDV.

Digital Video Camera Recommendation

Nate and I have decided we need a digital video camera to record our first meeting in Las Vegas coming up soon, so this week I need to do some research on purchasing a good quality digital video camera.

Since I know practically nothing in this area, the first step is to ask family and friends what they have and whether they like their video cameras or not. I figured that many of you that are reading this also probably have some digital video cameras, so I’d also like to invite you to share your opinions on the ones you have. Our basic requirements;
  • Price of under $500 if possible
  • Easy to operate and upload to the computer.
  • Quality picture and sound is more important than lots of fancy gadgets
  • Good battery life

We aren’t looking for anything fancy — basically something that will be a good workhorse camera that will allow us to place some video onto the blog and site in the months to come. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciate to head us in the right direction…

Philips Keychain Digital Camera

  • I got Philips’ keychain digital camera for Christmas. I think it cost about $20, and surely was a tempting stocking stuffer last Christmas. While it may be a nice little camera for my collection, I can’t say it is a great performer. Here are some of my criticism of the keychain camera…
  • Image Quality Unfortunately, the image is very small. The “high resolution” setting is onlu 352 x 288 pixels, barely large enough for a web image. In low light (indoor light) you get horizontal lines accross the images.
  • Software Another complaint is that the camera forces you to use Availasoft software to download the pictures from the camera. Like most cheap software packages, it tries to install other programs on your machine like a photo album. On the bright side, the software (called MyCam CIF) allows you to control the camera directly from the software. This allows you to preview what the camera sees on screen. You can capture a frame, and even shoot in video mode this way.
  • Viewfinder Probably the biggest disappointment of this camera was the viewfinder. In trying to get an image to accompany this review, I had to take many photos of the same subject matter because, what I was seeing through the viewfinder wasn’t what got photographed. It was so off that I would have swore the camera wasn’t even pointing in the right direction. Here is a sample image from Philips Keychain Digital Camera

Philips PT44434 Retro Inspired Ultra Slim Digital Camera

The Philips PT44434 also comes with just 16 MB of internal storage capacity for ‘must-have shots even when your memory card is full’ (did a politician write up the PT44434’s feature list?) which, thankfully, can be expanded via the built in SD card slot.
In fairness, however, and despite our flippancy, the Philips PT44434 digital camera only costs just under $50, so perhaps we’re being a little too harsh, but not overly so – especially when you consider that your cell phone’s inbuilt camera is probably somewhat higher specified (even if you only got it free on contract).
With this in mind we cannot help but think that this camera will hardly appeal to the young ‘trendy’ consumer it’s so obviously trying to cater for but, instead, only to the likes of Aunt Agnus who simply refuses to accept that cell phones have a place in society and that cell phones with any form of lens is positively the result of witchcraft.

Kodak EasyShare Z650

The Kodak EasyShare Z650 features a lens housing that extends out from the body of the camera by about one and a quarter inches. When the camera is powered off, the lens barrel retracts into this housing. The optional lens cap offers further protection. Covering the entire housing of the lens is a quarter-inch wide, black rubber strip that helps provide additional grip when shooting and breaks up the otherwise plastic silver of the camera body. The lens cap fits loosely and pops off easily when bumped or when the camera is turned on and the lens begins to extend. The Schneider-Kreuznach Variogon 10x optical zoom lens can be customized by using the included lens adapter in conjunction with either wide-angle or telephoto lenses or B+W circular polarizer or B+W neutral density filters.

The Kodak EasyShare Z650 has a 1/2.5-inch, 6.1 MP CCD, a pop-up flash, and a 2.0-inch LCD screen. The Kodak Z650 has a full auto mode, 16 preset still shooting modes, and a movie mode in addition to the manually oriented PASM modes. Originally priced at $349, it can now be found online for between $225 and $300 through various retailers including Kodak who dropped the price drastically at the end of 2006.

Kodak EasyShare V1253 Digital Camera

Kodak's $279.95 EasyShare V1253 packs a surprising amount of capability into a small point-and-shoot package. Not only does it come with a 12.4-megapixel CCD, digital image stabilization, face recognition, a wealth of automatic modes, and a large LCD, but you get the ability to shoot high-quality, high-definition 720p-resolution video. Just be prepared to wait between shots and deal with mediocre low-light performance.
At 4x2.2x0.9 inches, the V1253 isn't as compact as some of Canon's and Casio's offerings, but it's still small enough to easily fit inside a pocket with its 3x zoom lens fully retracted. The large 3.1-inch LCD is viewable in direct sunlight—which is good, given that there's no optical viewfinder—and its 960x240 resolution offers crisp detail for reviewing images. The camera's casing, available in black or glossy white, feels sturdy.
As for image quality, the V1253 takes excellent still pictures outdoors and in well-lit areas. The CCD picks up an almost disturbing amount of detail—think individual pores on close portrait shots—and the face-recognition capability meant that most of our shots were focused properly. Images were sharp and vibrant, with accurate white balance and realistic color (again, in well-lit shots). In darker conditions, however, the camera's higher ISO modes resulted in extremely grainy images. At night or in dim light, leaving the camera on automatic instead of choosing the appropriate scene mode virtually guarantees a grainy photo

Kodak EasyShare V530 Digital Camera

  • Kodak's new EasyShare V530 is a 5.0 megapixel camera allowing you to take prints up to 20" x 30" that comes with 3x Schneider-Kreuznach C-Variogon optical zoom lens and max f-stop of f/2.8 - f/4.8. The one thing that would drive away the professionals from EasyShare V530 is the absence of a manual mode.
  • Newbies can be content with the fact that the preview LCD also provides a short description of each shooting mode (the V530 has 20 of them), which is definitely helpful when you're learning photography. Sadly, the LCD is a tad smaller than was required, at 2.0", although it has a wide 170° viewing angle.
  • The EasyShare V530 is also capable of taking videos at 30fps (VGA resolution - 640x480), in MPEG-4 format, and play it back. A neat feature is the digital image stabilization that avoids shaking when shooting videos. With the provided video cables, you can easy connect to a TV and watch the videos.

Kodak Bluetooth Digital Camera Revealed

Kodak has a totally new Bluetooth-enabled digital camera (most likely the point-and-shoot type). The model, as yet unnamed, was revealed on the FCC's website when the Bluetooth component - which fortunately for us has a different FCC ID - was approved by the FCC.

The Bluetooth module is supposed to be professionally installed - so is it like an add-on that you get done at Kodak authorized centers? It's hard to tell.
